Beard Shampoo

Our first recommendation is to get a beard shampoo. If you are growing out your facial hair, it is important to keep it clean by having a beard shampoo. This is not to be confused with regular hair shampoo. The primary difference between hair shampoo and beard shampoo is that regular hair shampoo usually contains harsh chemicals that strip your beard of natural oils.

Additionally, using regular hair shampoo to wash your beard can cause problems down the road. Dry and itchy skin with coarse and brittle beard hair is not something you want to deal with. Washing your beard 2 - 3 times a week is recommended, however, if you feel as though your beard is particularly oily you can increase it as you see fit. Just keep in mind that you don’t want your beard to be overly dry.

Beard Brushes and Beard Combs

We recommend that you get both a beard brush and a beard comb. As you grow your beard, your facial hair will go through different phases. A beard comb is good when your beard is less than two inches. Using a beard comb can help encourage your facial hair to grow in the right direction.

As your beard grows in length, a beard brush will start to become important. If you have an oily beard, a beard brush can help distribute those oils evenly across your beard strands. That oil is essential to prevent strands from being brittle, splitting, and dull looking.

Beard Trimmers and Scissors

Once you grow your beard to the length you want it, a trimmer or a pair of scissors is an essential tool to maintain your look. The best way to trim a beard is to first comb or brush your beard as you normally would. 

If you are using a beard trimmer, make sure you are using the proper trimming guide. This controls how much beard you are taking off. If you are using a pair of scissors, make sure to use it in conjunction with your comb by cutting the hair outside of the comb. This will prevent you from accidentally taking too much beard off.

Beard Wax

Beard wax is a product to help style your beard. It is the hair gel equivalent of your beard.
