When we first notice that bald spot in the mirror or start finding hair on our pillow or even in our dinner, we’ll do almost anything to stop and reverse what's happening. Here we’re going to discuss three of the most common hair loss treatments and what they are actually providing on our hair regrowth journey.

Rogaine:

The main ingredient in this popular hair loss product is Minoxidil. Some of the common side effects of this medication include the following:

• Sensitive skin on the scalp
• Skin dryness / flaking leading to Dandruff
• Irritation can occur where it is applied on the scalp
• Rapid heart rate, dizziness, fainting, swollen hands and feet
• Hair shedding

Minoxidil is designed to be a hair growth agent, something to provide ideal conditions for hair growth on the scalp. While advertised as a hair regrowth solution, Minoxidil’s primary result is the overall appearance of hair thickening rather than new growth. Furthermore, seeing as Minoxidil does not block DHT (a sex steroid that had been found to cause male pattern hair loss.) it shouldn’t be considered a long-term solution for baldness. It merely ‘fertilizes’ the scalp and maintains the hairs already on it.

Results seen in at least 6 months of using the product.

Propecia & Hims:

These two products utilize the drug, Finasteride, to prevent hair loss. Some results that come along with taking Finasteride include:

• Decreased sexual ability, drive, performance, or desire
• Chills
• Cold Sweats
• Dizziness
• Confusion

Unlike, Minoxidil, this pharmaceutical drug, when taken daily, does focus on blocking DHT. By blocking this male hormone, Finasteride can potentially halt hair loss, while helping keep the hair already on your head. This being said, just like Minoxidil, Finasteride is not a hair regrowth agent, although some people have reported seeing a few new hairs growing while taking the drug.

Results seen in 6-12 months while consistently taking the drug.

Laser Combs & Helmets:

These combs and helmets focus on low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to treat hair loss and promote hair growth. Side effects of these hair loss products include:

• Hair shedding
• FDA cleared, NOT approved
• Being a recently discovered hair loss solution, the possible long term side effects are still unknown
• They will set you back quite a few bucks (from about $200 to $2,500)

Your standard Laser Comb is a hand-held device that, when used properly, utilizes lasers to revive hair follicles. The lasers give the follicles the energy they need to grow more hair, if the hair follicles are caught before they reach a point of miniaturization that is not reversible with the comb. As for the results of this treatment method, there are the same number of studies that show that Laser treatment is effective as there are studies that display the complete opposite. Since it is such a new form of hair loss therapy, laser combs and helmets results are not guaranteed and vary greatly for each individual.
